When I visit schools and libraries, I bring a LOT of materials– books, puppets, word cards, press sheets, rhythm shakers, game pieces, and sometimes even real vegetables. I also bring a folding screen backdrop that helps define the space and gives the kids a colorful focus. In honor of my new book, Rainbow Stew, and also because the previous screen, lugged around to over 100 schools in the last 15 years, is getting a bit shabby, I just finished this new one. Kids can “pick” the veggies that are velcro’ed on or tucked into earthy pockets. It’s all part of getting kids to read, write, draw, think, and eat their vegetables!
